Unearthing Ancient Treasures in the Swiss Alps: A Unique Discovery

Chapter 1: A Remarkable Find in the Swiss Alps
In a fascinating discovery, a tourist stumbled upon an ancient treasure hidden in the Swiss Alps, specifically at an ancient cult site. Archaeologists believe this location served as a place of worship where offerings were made to deities in ancient times. A team of researchers has uncovered a variety of artifacts during their investigations.
In the summer of 2020, a hiker ventured off the beaten path during a mountain hike in the Swiss Alps. During his trek, he discovered an old-looking coin and promptly reported his find to the Archaeological Service of the Canton of Bern (Archäologische Dienst des Kantons Bern). However, due to pandemic-related restrictions, excavations were delayed for two years.
During the archaeological exploration, approximately 100 coins, 27 small crystals, 59 Roman shoe nails, embellished brooches, and a fragment of a leaf-shaped votive tablet were uncovered. Experts suggest this site was likely a sanctuary where ancient people offered their tributes to the gods.
“This discovery is remarkable, particularly due to the treasure's size and its unique location,” stated Regula Gubler, the lead archaeologist, in an interview with Newsweek. “Typically, Roman artifacts are found along mountain passes, but this site is quite distant from any known human settlements, both ancient and contemporary,” she elaborated. Gubler emphasizes that although people inhabited the Alps in ancient times, they primarily resided in the valleys, much like today.
Section 1.1: Insights into the Cult Site
The site, located at an elevation of 2,590 meters above sea level, is nestled between the Ammertenhorn and Wildstrubel mountains. Reaching the nearest trail requires several hours of hiking.
“To conduct the excavations, we had to camp on-site, bringing tents and supplies for multiple days, which was quite an unusual experience,” Gubler admitted.
Mountains have long been associated with divine beings. The towering peaks, appearing to stretch towards the heavens, were viewed as gateways to the divine and venues for encounters with higher powers. For instance, it was on Mount Sinai that Yahweh revealed himself to Moses, while the summit of Mount Olympus was home to Greek deities. Similarly, Slavic mythologies featured mountains as sacred realms.
Subsection 1.1.1: Evidence of Ancient Pilgrimages
Archaeologists propose that this plateau may have served as a pilgrimage destination in ancient times. The artifacts recovered share similarities with those found at other known sacred sites dating back to Roman times. Additionally, a Roman shrine dedicated to mountain gods was previously discovered a few kilometers away. In the city of Thun, several temples from the Imperial period were found, one of which contained a tablet referencing an unidentified female deity.
“The findings indicate that the Roman inhabitants of the region not only revered the mountains from a distance but also made journeys to be in their presence,” Gubler explained. “Though our research is still in its early phases, we can infer that individuals came here to seek blessings or express gratitude to the gods,” she added.
Gubler also noted that the presence of crystals could be significant. “The crystals we discovered occur naturally in the mountains, possibly contributing to the site's sacred status in the eyes of ancient peoples.”
Switzerland remained under Roman rule for nearly 500 years, from the first century BC until approximately 401 AD. Today, numerous remnants of Roman architecture can still be found throughout the country, with archaeologists frequently unearthing artifacts from this era.
