Don't Become a Relic: Embrace Growth and Change

Written on

Chapter 1: The Dangers of Stagnation

It's crucial to find ways to evolve and advance; otherwise, the world will move on without you.

I once had a friend who remained unchanged from our first year of university to our last. His nonchalant attitude towards his studies puzzled me. While I wasn’t the most diligent student, I understood the importance of exams. Sadly, he showed little concern during the semester or exam time, which was evident in his results. His grades weren’t the only thing that suffered; he avoided taking responsibility for his life, preferring to cling to his childhood for as long as he could.

Leaving Your Comfort Zone

A comfort zone feels secure; it's a snug environment where your mind resists change. It fights against the need to evolve and grow. True growth requires venturing into the unknown, a daunting place devoid of clear direction, relying solely on the hope of finding your way back to safety.

Every time you step outside your comfort zone, you expose yourself to the fears and uncertainties of that dark, unfamiliar territory. In such moments, you may feel insignificant, lack insight, and risk looking foolish, especially when the stakes are high. Yet, this leap is essential for growth and transformation—staying stagnant risks becoming a relic in a world that’s constantly changing.

The Thin Line Between Perfection and Ego

In our pursuit of excellence, we often become fixated on perfection. Educational systems have ingrained the belief that achieving the highest grades equates to success, equating anything less with failure. This mindset is misguided.

The quest for perfection can stifle creativity, as true artistic expression is never about being flawless in the creator’s eyes. It’s about sharing your work and allowing your audience to form their own judgments. A significant reason people remain stagnant is their obsession with perfection in new ventures. Unfortunately, perfection is subjective.

You might feel that the book you’re penning isn’t up to par, or a well-meaning friend critiques your work harshly. Perhaps your parents have made you doubt your parenting abilities, leading to feelings of inadequacy. Striving for unattainable perfection is rooted in ego; you cannot truly know what the ideal standard is.

As a result, you may never share that remarkable book or feel inadequate as a parent, which can dampen your spirit. This stagnation keeps you from evolving into the extraordinary person you’re capable of being.

Humility and Vulnerability: Keys to Growth

From a young age, we’re often advised to protect ourselves from the outside world. While some level of self-protection is necessary for mental well-being, closing yourself off completely stifles growth.

Growth requires friction—the challenges and adversities we face from others are essential for developing resilience. Personally, I find discomfort in smooth sailing; I thrive on overcoming challenges, which helps prevent stagnation.

Humility is vital; it’s essential to remind yourself that there’s always more to learn. This mindset fosters a desire for improvement—not perfection. Vulnerability is often misunderstood as weakness, but it can be your greatest strength. It fosters relatability and openness, allowing those around you to engage with your insights.

As Brene Brown eloquently states, vulnerability is not about winning or losing; it’s about having the courage to show up despite the uncertainty of the outcome.

In conclusion, the journey of evolving and avoiding stagnation begins with embracing humility and vulnerability.
