Embrace 60 Minutes of Self-Care: A Journey Through Yoga

Chapter 1: The Beginning of My Yoga Journey
In this series, I will document my transformation from a novice yoga student to someone who aspires to teach yoga one day.
About a year ago, I impulsively joined my first yoga class. Living in Southern California, where fitness culture thrives, it's hard not to notice the multitude of people jogging, cycling, or carrying yoga mats everywhere. My local area boasts around ten different fitness studios within a three-mile radius, each offering a unique experience.
In July 2023, I was in recovery from an intermittent lower back injury. I had been quite active during my college years, but following a diagnosis of an autoimmune disease and transitioning to a full-time job, my core strength diminished. My attempts to return to weightlifting proved challenging; my weakened core resulted in significant discomfort during most exercises. Even stretching initially fell short of improving my mobility.
My First Experience
I stepped into a studio close to my grocery store, feeling overwhelmed by the crowd. The room was filled with individuals in stylish sports bras and trendy leggings, showcasing what seemed like perfect physiques. Despite my lack of experience, I joined the class, trusting the instructor's guidance.
Many poses felt unreachable, as my tight hamstrings and hip flexors prevented me from bending my legs or even touching my toes. However, as the hour progressed, I began to unlock both physically and mentally. I discovered that stretching didn’t have to be painful; I didn’t need to touch my toes to feel the stretch in my hamstrings. The heated environment allowed me to become more flexible. In the final resting pose, I nearly drifted off to sleep on the mat—something I had never experienced before. Even as a child, I had never taken naps despite staying up late. Yet, in just 60 minutes, my mind found peace, focusing solely on my breath and deepening my stretches.
Confidence Builds Over Time
After that initial class, I realized I had to return. Despite not fitting in with the crowd or mastering the poses, I recognized that the only person responsible for my progress was myself. All I required was my determination and my yoga mat—no fancy gear or accessories needed. What I needed was patience and the commitment to invest an hour in my body, opening up to the world before moving on to weight training.
An hour might seem lengthy, but it's uncommon for us to dedicate that much time to ourselves. We are quick to schedule appointments or devote time to work or the gym, but how often do we prioritize our own well-being?
In essence, yoga provided me with that precious hour—something I seldom allow myself. The only expectation I had was for myself. No one could judge me; if they did, their opinions didn’t matter. My breath was the key to deepening my stretches, not someone else's gaze. If my body couldn’t perform today, that was perfectly fine. There would always be another opportunity—tomorrow, next week, or even next year. As long as I showed up for myself, progress was within reach.
That's my reflection for tonight.
Feel free to react, clap, or comment on your own experiences. What has your yoga journey been like? Have you thought about starting? How do you dedicate 60 minutes to yourself?
