# Embrace Authenticity at Work: The Journey to Self-Expression

Written on

Chapter 1: The Weight of Workplace Expectations

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by your job environment? For the last six months, I’ve been reflecting on my corporate situation extensively—sleepless nights and stomach issues became my companions. The daily negativity, rumors, and backstabbing left me drained. I bet you can relate.

It got to the point where I was haunted by two terrifying scenarios: enduring a toxic workplace indefinitely, or the looming threat of job loss, which brings along the stress of bills, housing, and the fear of feeling obsolete in a world that often disregards millennials as outdated or too costly.

However, I’ve turned a corner. I’m not sure how long this feeling will last, but I feel liberated because I’ve done something deemed “dangerous” by HR professionals: I removed my psychological mask at work.

This isn’t about an anti-COVID mask. It’s the facade we all adopt to interact with colleagues and superiors. Senior management often emphasizes the importance of this mask for career advancement, as discussed in Edward Smith’s LinkedIn article.

A Friday Revelation

It’s Friday night as I write this. You know what that means, right? After a grueling week filled with corporate strife, I feel surprisingly at peace.

Let me clarify: I’m not energized in the typical sense, like someone ready for a workout or a night out. No, I feel at ease—aligned with my true self, devoid of the burdens of expectation.

You might think this perspective is odd, especially in our society obsessed with success and quick results. Yet, tonight, I’m simply content, breathing calmly and embracing a profound sense of inner peace.

I certainly didn’t anticipate this outcome, but it happened because I took ownership of my emotions.

Embracing Brutal Honesty

I’ll be frank: confronting the VP with my truths was a way to confront my own deep-seated fears. It may sound contradictory, but sometimes, facing challenges head-on is the best strategy.

Although there’s a lingering fear of job loss, I know my contributions to the company speak for themselves. The real concern is the ongoing emotional toll of corporate life, where many conceal their true thoughts behind masks.

Most colleagues prioritize personal gain over collective success, perpetuating a culture of insincerity.

The Risk of Vulnerability

To be open with the VP felt like baring my soul. I left his office knowing he held the knowledge of my vulnerabilities, which could be used against me. Yet, by revealing my values, I hoped to encourage him to reflect on his own.

If you’re considering a similar path, I advise caution. Your circumstances differ from mine, and it’s crucial to assess the dynamics of your workplace.

Taking the Leap: Tips for Authenticity

Start by tuning into your genuine feelings. Instead of blindly accepting the status quo, establish boundaries regarding what feels right for you.

For example, if a colleague’s comments annoy you, respond with kindness and ask if they’re tired of repeating themselves. If you feel out of the loop, gently inquire if they’re weary of secrecy.

This gradual approach helps restore your confidence and maintain your integrity without compromising your well-being.

Are You Ready to Join the (Zen) Fight Club?

If you choose to embrace honesty like I did, ensure you understand the human beneath the corporate persona.

This isn’t a simple task, but introspection can guide you in assessing your comfort level with the people around you. Ask yourself: Will you feel at ease returning to work after being authentic?

Ultimately, self-acceptance is the key to navigating workplace dynamics successfully.

In the first video titled "Can I be myself at work? | Linden Vazey | TEDxUOA," Linden explores the importance of authenticity in the workplace and how it can lead to a more fulfilling career.

The second video, "Dare to be vulnerable at work?" discusses the benefits of vulnerability in professional settings and how it fosters genuine connections among colleagues.

Remember, your journey is uniquely yours, and I hope my experience offers some insight. Feel free to share your thoughts or experiences in the comments.
