Embrace Challenges: Pray for Strength, Not Ease

Written on

Chapter 1: The Tough Road to Success

In times of difficulty, it’s common to yearn for a more straightforward path. When we find ourselves struggling, we often dream of being in a more comfortable situation. Yet, one undeniable truth remains: the journey towards achievement is often laden with challenges.

As our aspirations grow, so too do the hurdles we must navigate. The ancient texts of the East provide us with two essential terms that capture this contrast. "Preyas," a Sanskrit term, refers to the actions we find enjoyable, while "Shreyas" signifies the actions that are truly beneficial.

At any moment, we stand at a crossroads between choosing the easy route (Preyas) or the more rewarding path (Shreyas).

Consider the choices we face daily:

  • Skipping study sessions in favor of mindless browsing.
  • Choosing sleep over a morning workout.
  • Opting for dessert rather than healthier options.

The principle of Karma is straightforward: we possess the freedom to choose our actions, but we must accept the consequences that follow. Every decision yields both immediate and lasting effects. While the easy choices may offer instant gratification, they often lead to long-term dissatisfaction.

Human nature inclines us to seek comfort. Historically, stepping outside our safe zones posed serious risks. Though the dangers we face today differ from life-and-death situations, our instincts still respond similarly.

What, then, is the remedy?

We must train our minds to embrace challenges. If we aspire to excel in any area, we must be ready to confront obstacles head-on! Observing how others have navigated their struggles can provide valuable insights.

Take the caterpillar as an example: it must endure the challenge of breaking free from its cocoon to develop the strength needed to fly as a butterfly. Any attempt to ease its struggle would hinder its transformation.

Just like muscles, our minds grow stronger through facing resistance and venturing beyond our comfort zones. Stories of successful individuals invariably highlight their perseverance through trials and the obstacles they overcame. In fact, many successful people relish these challenges as opportunities for personal growth.

Conclusion

In the short term, the allure of easy choices is undeniable. However, relying on shortcuts can undermine our long-term success—both materially and spiritually. The most arduous journeys often yield the greatest satisfaction, especially when reflected upon later.

So, rather than wishing for a life devoid of challenges, let us seek the strength and courage to confront the inevitable hurdles on our path to excellence and achievement.
