You Can Enjoy Reading Without the Boring Books

Written on

Chapter 1: The Joy of Reading

Reading is an incredibly powerful and enlightening activity, yet many people only manage to read a handful of books each year. It's always surprising to meet individuals who navigate life without the benefit of literature for escapism, education, or entertainment. Personally, my ideal vacation involves lounging on a serene beach surrounded by an abundance of books.

From a young age, books have played a vital role in my life. I was that child who took a novel everywhere—birthday parties, recess, or visiting friends. I still carry that same passion today and have even faced consequences for reading during class. Books have transported me to different realms, imparted countless lessons, and offered emotional solace throughout my journey.

However, during my time at university, I drifted away from reading. With classes, assignments, a volunteer position at a lab, and other responsibilities, I felt I had neither the time nor the energy to indulge in books. This phase marked one of the low points in my life, largely due to the absence of literature. After some years, I rekindled my love for reading by revisiting comforting books from my childhood, which transformed my outlook once again. Following months of struggling to rise each morning, I found renewed excitement in diving back into the stories that had once captivated me. Far from family and friends, the characters in my books provided the comfort I so desperately needed.

Section 1.1: Reading for Pleasure

At its core, reading should bring joy and satisfaction. Many individuals shy away from reading because they feel compelled to choose certain types of books rather than following their interests. For instance, my husband thinks he must read dense military history texts due to his career, which leads to a lack of enthusiasm and leaves many of his books untouched for long periods. Some people assume only classic or so-called 'intellectual' books are worth their time.

While I recognize the importance of reading for knowledge—something I will discuss later—I firmly believe that reading should primarily be a leisurely pursuit. Personally, I find it challenging to sit through an entire movie without distraction, but I can easily lose myself in a book for hours. A well-crafted story engages the mind and imagination like nothing else, allowing you to step into another person's shoes, experience alternate realities, and explore distant or fantastical lands. There’s truly nothing like it.

Therefore, my advice is simple: set aside the complicated philosophy books, lengthy classics, or tedious manuals. Visit your local library or bookstore and discover what truly ignites your passion. Whether you enjoy teenage vampire tales, post-apocalyptic manga, or sizzling romance novels, indulge in what brings you joy.

Section 1.2: Reading for Learning

As I matured, I began to appreciate the value of reading for educational purposes. During my school and university years, my focus was on learning, and reading became an escape rather than a tool for knowledge. Once I completed my studies, I missed the intellectual stimulation and sought out topics that intrigued me, diving into relevant literature.

There are countless books available on nearly every subject, many of which are quite approachable even for those new to the field. I believe that learning is a continuous journey, and books serve as an excellent resource for ongoing education. Various forms of writing, such as blog posts and articles, are equally effective for exploring specific subjects. More importantly, reading enriches us on multiple levels.

Books can nurture personal growth. When you read, you gain insights into another person's perspective, whether through a fictional character or the author themselves. This allows you to experience their struggles and triumphs, fostering empathy.

Additionally, books enhance concentration. Engaging with a text demands more focus than passively watching television. Your brain works to convert printed words into vivid images, sensations, thoughts, and emotions, cultivating your imagination, creativity, and attention to detail.

Moreover, reading can improve your writing skills. As a non-native English speaker, I was fortunate to learn the language early, but I lacked the vocabulary and nuances of a native speaker. Reading extensively in English has been instrumental in my development, exposing me to diverse contexts and expanding my lexicon.

As a passionate reader, I have always aspired to be a writer. Today, I am taking steps toward that goal by crafting novels and articles. The countless books I have read have shaped my writing skills, teaching me about structure, descriptive techniques, dialogue, character development, and various other narrative elements that I now weave into my own work.

Even if writing isn’t your ambition, the indirect lessons learned from reading can enhance your speaking abilities, critical thinking, and positively influence many facets of your life.

Chapter 2: The Lifelong Journey of Reading

Reading remains my greatest passion. It has consistently provided comfort and joy throughout my life and now serves as a key tool for personal growth as I pursue my objectives. These days, I strive to balance my reading between fiction and non-fiction, seeking both pleasure and knowledge.

My final suggestion is to pick up any book that brings you happiness and dive in. Disregard the lists of 'must-reads' that you dread. Reading should first and foremost be a source of enjoyment. Each book offers valuable lessons, even if they don’t directly relate to the historical context of current events or complex literary analyses.
