Exciting Possibilities with the Apple Watch Ultra for Adventurers

Exploring the Apple Watch Ultra
As a long-time admirer of the Apple Watch, I've been using the Series 2 for some time. Although I've wanted to upgrade, its performance has kept me from doing so—until the arrival of the Apple Watch Ultra. This new model captures my interest with its rugged design, extended battery life, and a customizable action button that could potentially launch shortcuts. Encased in a titanium body, this is the Apple Watch I’ve always envisioned. While it may not have the sleek profile of other models, it embraces its function as a tool, which I genuinely appreciate.
The Apple Watch Ultra is also suitable for everyday use.
The primary areas of focus for Apple include:
- Scuba Divers
- Marathon Runners
- Mountaineers
I must admit, I'm not a diver or a marathoner, but I do aspire to be a mountaineer. Throughout my life, I've had the opportunity to explore parts of the Himalayas, embarking on hikes and expeditions amidst its breathtaking heights. I've navigated challenging rapids in river rafting and cycled along its meandering trails. Yet, there remains so much more to discover, and I envision returning to those mountains once or twice a year—for hikes, rafting, or simply enjoying serene moments atop a peak.

In these adventurous scenarios, my current Apple Watch struggles, particularly in tracking hiking workouts, mainly due to its age and declining battery. I’m confident that even a standard Apple Watch or an SE model would perform adequately.
These shorter hikes are glimpses of the grand adventures I hope to undertake. My bucket list includes:
- Trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp
- The Chaddar Trek
- Completing a Triathlon
The dream of reaching Everest Base Camp has lingered in my mind for years, ever since I first ventured into the Himalayas and heard captivating stories from others. My resolve was further solidified by a book I ghost-wrote, detailing Mr. Badri Baldawa's journey to the base camp at the age of 63—all alone. Although this trek leads only to the base camp, the final days are notably intense. Should the claims about the Apple Watch Ultra hold any truth, I believe it could serve as an excellent companion.
Chadar Trek Insights
The term "Chadar" means "blanket" in Hindi. This trek, regarded as one of the most hazardous, traverses the frozen River Zanskar in the Zanskar Valley. I’ve rafted down this river during the summer months when it flows with tremendous force. The Chadar Trek, however, involves walking back upstream on a thick layer of ice during winter—an ultimate test of endurance in extreme cold. With no connectivity available, the Apple Watch could be a reliable companion on this journey, potentially even enhancing safety with its SOS feature.
Triathlon Aspirations
This triathlon mirrors the Iron Man competition in the United States and consists of three segments:
- Trekking through mountains for 17 kilometers
- Cycling along hilly paths for 15 kilometers
- Kayaking through rapids on the River Ganga for 18 kilometers (including the notorious rapid known as "The WALL")
These activities are performed consecutively. Seven years ago, I completed the first two segments, which left me thoroughly exhausted. I aspire to train and attempt this challenge again. Given the Apple Watch Ultra's impressive battery life, I am confident it can keep pace with all three workouts during training—helping me navigate challenging routes, especially while cycling and hiking, where getting lost can be a real concern.
While these ambitions have been on hold, the Apple Watch Ultra has reignited my enthusiasm. I am determined to achieve them. Meanwhile, I will stay updated on Apple's advancements with this device, which is currently in its first version and looks promising. Although I don’t need it right now, I anticipate that by the time I embark on my next adventure, it will be in its most refined state.
With a price tag of $799, this watch isn't the cheapest option, but it seems reasonable considering its features and Apple's effective marketing strategy.
