Exploring the Historical Significance of Old Grand Port, Mauritius

Chapter 1: Introduction to Old Grand Port
Old Grand Port, or Vieux Grand Port as it's known in French, is a quaint town situated on the eastern shores of Mauritius, not far from Mahebourg. This area is a popular destination for tourists due to its historical importance as the first European settlement on the island. During our 2024 winter stay in Mauritius, we made a point to visit after hiking to the summit of Lion Mountain, which overlooks the town.
Initially, we explored the town's beach. While it wasn’t particularly remarkable—being rocky and a bit murky—it offered a pleasant atmosphere and lovely views of the surrounding area.
Section 1.1: Historical Landmarks
Next, we ventured to the historical site of Old Grand Port. Adjacent to the modern church of Notre Dame du Grand Puvoir lie the remnants of Fort Frederik Henrik, recognized as the oldest manmade structure in Mauritius. The Dutch originally constructed this fort in 1638, naming it after a notable aristocrat. However, it was demolished when the Dutch abandoned the island in 1710. Only the foundational remains date back to that era, while the visible walls are from a subsequent French fort.
The site was quite picturesque, offering stunning views of the sea from the lush, grassy coast. It was accessible for free and well-preserved, featuring a small museum that showcased local artifacts, including tools and animal bones from the early settlers.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Museum Experience
The museum provided fascinating insights into the lives of the island's early inhabitants, enriching our understanding of the region's past.
Section 1.2: The Site of First Landing
On our return to Mahebourg, we made a stop at the location where the first Dutch landing occurred. Situated about two kilometers west of Old Grand Port, this site is near the bridge that spans the Champagne River. A short path led us from the road to a narrow pebble beach nestled within a large bay surrounded by mangroves. It was here, in 1598, that Dutch explorers first set foot on Mauritius, marking a significant moment in history. A commemorative pillar stands on a platform nearby, honoring those early adventurers.
