Finding Peace in a Chaotic World: Daily Strategies for Stress Relief

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Daily Stressors

Living in the United States, it's no surprise that individuals encounter stress on a daily basis. From the moment we step outside, unexpected challenges can easily become overwhelming. Many people start their mornings to the sounds of crying infants, restless children, work emails flooding in, demanding bosses, racing thoughts, extensive to-do lists, and the incessant beeping of alarms. Outside my window, I can hear sirens, the occasional shouts of teenagers from the local high school, and the barking of dogs in our neighborhood. The sounds of the city, including the subway and honking horns, have been a constant backdrop to my adult life. While at times I appreciate the vibrancy around me, the relentless noise can be quite stressful. However, a couple of months ago, I introduced some new routines that have significantly alleviated my stress levels.

One pivotal change I made was to rise thirty minutes earlier. Previously, my mornings felt rushed as I scrambled to get ready, prepare breakfast, brew my coffee, and pack my lunch. Often, I would forget my lunch, skip my coffee, miss my Bible study, or even forgo breakfast altogether. On some occasions, I would catch the later train, arriving at work later than desired.

Now, I dedicate time in the morning to listen to my Bible in One Year Study, enjoy breakfast, and sip my coffee before heading out. This new routine embodies stress-free living; it's a peaceful segment of my day, my "me time," uninterrupted by others.

Section 1.1: Embracing Simplicity in Commute

I wear the same dress for my daily commute. Hear me out: my commute lasts about 25 minutes, and I change into my work attire once I arrive. My go-to is a black linen dress from Everlane, which I find to be perfect for commuting—lightweight, airy, and easy to wash and hang to dry. So far, I've had no issues with it, and I might even consider purchasing it in another color. In this case, I believe that simplicity is beneficial.

Afterward, I opt for the longer train route that allows me to avoid transfers. This choice gives me the chance to read on my Kindle or listen to an audiobook. I also take advantage of this time to write for this platform—activities I genuinely enjoy that help me slow down and consequently reduce my stress.

Subsection 1.1.1: Establishing a Routine at Work

Establishing a calming routine at work

Upon arriving at the office, I set aside all my belongings before changing into my work clothes. I check my emails, draft a to-do list, touch base with my boss, and attend meetings. I focus on my work tasks and, importantly, steer clear of office drama. A significant stress relief for me this month has been learning to assertively say, "No, I cannot support that." If a task doesn't align with our organization's mission, I prefer to refrain from involvement.

Section 1.2: The Importance of Breaks

Each day, I treat myself to a leisurely walk around the building to grab a cup of coffee after lunch, either alone or with a friend. This simple act is a reward for myself. Although I typically order a regular black coffee, the act of stepping outside the office, incorporating movement, and enjoying solitude is a genuine stress-reliever.

Chapter 2: Prioritizing Self-Care

After my workday concludes, I head straight to the gym located in my workplace. Previously, I would either work out at home or endure traffic to reach a different gym. I considered joining a nearby boutique gym for convenience but wanted to avoid commitment. I appreciate the flexibility of working out whenever I choose, and having the gym at work eliminates excuses for not going.

Stress manifests for me as weight gain, anxiety, diminished productivity, lack of focus, low motivation, and reduced social interaction. Many of you might relate to these feelings. I consciously choose to inhabit stressful environments and engage in a demanding job, but I also have control over my commitments outside of these areas. I strive to limit my exposure to stress wherever possible.

Now that I've shared my strategies for cultivating a more peaceful and health-conscious lifestyle, I encourage you to reflect on how you might enhance your own living environment to foster a more stress-free existence.
