Chapter 1: Seeking Clarity in Life's Purpose
Are you in your 30s and still on a quest for your life’s meaning?
During my search for a personal development coach, a friend shared valuable wisdom that resonated with me. Once again, I was grappling with that nagging feeling of unfulfillment. Despite having achieved many of my aspirations—like being location-independent for six years and enjoying a life free from a cubicle—I still felt a sense of unrest.
I had experienced adventure and married someone who shares my values: Happiness equals Health, Love, and Freedom. Yet, I found myself pondering a deeper question: What’s my purpose?
In Japanese, they refer to it as "ikigai," while the French term is "raison d'être." For me, it’s the driving force that keeps me awake at night and fills my journal with inquiries. I began to contemplate my legacy: What will remain after I'm gone?
The thought of wasted life and untapped potential is unsettling. I immersed myself in books, established self-growth routines, and traveled for inspiration. However, one avenue I hadn’t explored was hiring a coach.
I started with several 'discovery calls' to find the right fit. As a novice to coaching, I initially made common mistakes:
- Seeking someone who mirrored my personality
- Expecting them to provide all the answers
- Confusing coaching with mentorship
- Disregarding the advice to "just follow your passions"
A pivotal moment came when a friend reminded me that a coach’s primary role is to ask the right questions, empowering you to uncover your own answers. This shifted my perspective on coaching entirely.
After careful consideration, I chose a coach who not only asked insightful questions but also resonated with my energy. The impact has been transformative; the right guidance has led me to greater clarity and improved decision-making. I’m starting to find answers to the questions that once overwhelmed me.
So far, this journey has inspired me to establish consistent daily routines, such as writing, taking nature walks, and meditating. I’ve also reignited a long-dormant project and am feeling invigorated about what lies ahead.
While I may not yet know the full extent of my legacy, I am actively following the signs that lead me in the right direction. Progress is being made, and I’m on my way.
