Finding Your True Self: Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?
Written on
Chapter 1: The Question of Identity
The phrase, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" has been posed to countless children. Many schools encourage kids to contemplate this question, often resulting in charming or amusing responses. Children envision limitless possibilities, imagining themselves as doctors, firefighters, or entrepreneurs.
As we mature, however, the frequency of this question diminishes, and there's an unspoken expectation that we should already have our career paths figured out. Unfortunately, it seems less endearing when posed to adults. Instead of fixating solely on our future professions, we should consider an essential aspect that often gets overlooked: who we aspire to be as individuals.
The good news is, discovering who you want to be is an attainable goal. It’s a liberating process that doesn’t come with a price tag. After all, aren’t we all still on a journey to define ourselves? The pressure of determining a career path can be overwhelming, but reflecting on who you want to become can guide you toward your true aspirations.
Sure, the journey can be daunting, especially if you're contemplating significant changes in your identity. That's completely normal! Growth is a continuous journey, and every day presents opportunities for learning and self-improvement.
I reflect on my own journey and the person I used to be compared to who I am today. People have often suggested that I should adopt a tougher demeanor, labeling me as "too nice." Perhaps you’ve encountered similar criticisms.
Criticism is ubiquitous, isn’t it?
While I recognize the importance of self-improvement, it's crucial to remember that these critiques are merely expressions of individual opinions.
Though it’s natural to take feedback to heart, I eventually questioned why I allowed others to dictate how I felt about myself. This led me to reassess who I want to be each day—whether I’m waking up, stepping into a meeting, or navigating any situation. It’s about being present for myself and honoring my true self.
Growth doesn’t cease once we reach adulthood. Yes, our physical growth may stop, but emotional, intellectual, and mental development continues. We constantly strive to evolve into the best versions of ourselves.
As we navigate this path, it's common to feel lost amidst the chaos of life, leading to frustration or resentment. Remember, it's a human experience.
So, I pose this question: who are you right now, at this moment?
Are you a loving friend, a supportive family member, or a compassionate leader? Are you brave yet introspective? Do you find yourself battling your inner demons, or do you conceal your true self for fear of rejection?
Then, consider who you wish to be as you grow older. Is there a person who inspires you to reach that goal? Are you satisfied with your current self, and does it resonate with your values?
As you strive for personal growth, take time to appreciate how far you've come. Even on challenging days when you feel overwhelmed, it’s essential to recognize that you can’t simply switch off parts of who you are.
There are times when I remind myself: this is me, and I’m proud of who I want to be.
If others try to dictate who you should become, it’s wise to approach their opinions with skepticism, especially if you find contentment in your identity.
Reflecting on my journey, I realized I don’t wish to be unkind. I choose kindness, empathy, and courage because while being mean might achieve short-term results, it can also damage trust and relationships.
This doesn’t imply that I shy away from standing my ground; rather, it’s about discerning which conflicts are worth engaging in. In a world that desperately needs compassion and kindness, why opt for negativity? Life is simply too fleeting for that mindset.
Understanding who I am and who I wish to be has fostered a sense of inner peace and boosted my self-assurance.
So, who do you aspire to be as you grow older? Each day, aim to embody that ideal self. When life feels overwhelming and you lose touch with your essence, take a moment to pause. Perhaps it's your inner voice signaling that something doesn't align with your values.
Jot down your thoughts. Who are you right now? What aspects of yourself do you cherish? Who do you wish to continue becoming? Who inspires that vision? Are you content with your current self, and does it reflect your moral compass?
Ultimately, only you can define who you want to be and who you strive to be each day as you face the world. Embrace self-love, and remember, I’m cheering for you!
