Week Eighteen: Poetry Writing Prompts
Welcome to the eighteenth week of our 2024 Writing Prompt Journey! This week, we present three fresh prompts along with two thematic words or concepts for each, which you might want to weave into your poetry for an added challenge.
If these prompts don’t ignite your creativity, feel free to let the accompanying images inspire you in another direction. Your poems can take any form and utilize various poetic devices. Here are a few poetic structures to consider as you begin:
- Stornello: This is a three-line stanza with each line containing 11 syllables. The typical rhyme scheme is AAA. You can mix multiple stornelli to create a longer work.
- Rhyming Ballad: Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," this form consists of six-line stanzas with a trochaic octameter. While Poe's piece is extensive, feel free to write shorter stanzas. The end rhyme pattern is ABCBBB.
- One-Line Poem: These concise verses typically contain 30 words or fewer, encapsulating a complete thought, image, or emotion.
