The Narcissistic Exploitation of JoJo Siwa: A Deep Dive

Written on

Chapter 1: The Rise of JoJo Siwa

From her once adorable bows to her now questionable antics, JoJo Siwa stands as a product of the entertainment industry, designed to capture the masses.

The overt display of grandiose narcissism exhibited by JoJo Siwa is precisely why I find the entertainment world so troubling. Siwanators, please hold your fire! Let me clarify—I genuinely like JoJo. As a long-time fan of the popular Lifetime reality show "Dance Moms," I quickly became a fan of her when she joined the cast (sorry, Maddie!).

Now, was JoJo the top dancer? In my humble opinion, that accolade should go to Chloe Lukasiak, but that's another discussion. JoJo may not have excelled in technique, yet she compensated with her vibrant personality and confidence. Or perhaps that was merely her burgeoning narcissism shining through each time she nailed a developpé in the studio.

It was evident when she spoke back to her dance instructor, Abby Lee Miller, and cleverly shifted blame to avoid taking responsibility. This tiny dancer was clearly outgrowing her role.

Allow me to share a personal anecdote. As a child, if I ever spoke to an adult in such a manner, my parents would have swiftly corrected me. They would have put me in my place immediately, ensuring I apologized for any misbehavior, followed by a grounding.

I began to recognize that little 8-year-old JoJo wasn’t merely acting beyond her years. Instead, she was molded to be an insufferably entitled child. Rather than correcting her ill-mannered behavior, it was being encouraged and disguised as confidence. There's a fine line between standing up for oneself and being arrogant, a distinction JoJo never seemed to grasp.

Fast forward to 2024, and JoJo Siwa continues to flaunt her narcissistic traits unabashedly. Society not only tolerates but also rewards her grandiosity. What else could explain the longevity of her career?

Despite her lack of acting skills and her admission that she doesn't see herself as a vocalist, she identifies as an "entertainer." But is that label truly justified? She can dance, undoubtedly, but she's far from a triple threat. Who exactly is she entertaining these days? The once-loyal 10-year-olds have likely moved on, and music enthusiasts are certainly not her target demographic.

To clarify, this so-called "talent" has the nerve to acknowledge her vocal limitations yet still proceeds to release music for our listening (dis)pleasure. What's the motivation behind this? The same thing that drives every narcissist—ATTENTION.

"My goal for this song — I wasn't concerned with whether people liked it or hated it. I wanted to grab people's attention. I wanted to spark conversation,"

— JoJo Siwa, Good Morning America.

It's safe to say she's achieved that.

"Like it or not — what’s been stuck in your mind for the last three days?"

Now that’s a bold move, isn’t it?

But can we blame her? The world could have chosen to overlook her antics, yet we willingly fed into her insatiable need for recognition. And she makes sure everyone is aware of it.

Having finally shed her sassy child-star image (albeit five years too late) to embrace her "bad girl" phase, JoJo has transformed into a caricature of herself. Have you ever pondered why every pop star feels the need to adopt a "bad" persona? It’s not truly reinvention, nor is it shocking—it’s a requirement that often induces second-hand embarrassment. Just like previous ill-fated artists, the music industry is capitalizing on the current buzz surrounding Siwa. As the saying goes in show business, all publicity is good publicity.

But could JoJo Siwa's career serve as a prime example of a narcissist confusing exploitation for admiration? Perhaps she is currently navigating the humiliation stage of her journey. I fear that her recent track, "Karma," may ultimately seal her fate. Maybe she’ll finally grasp the message behind the backlash against her latest—and hopefully only—song (because autotune can only take you so far).

Will we see the last of JoJo Siwa's iconic smile? Is her career destined to fade into obscurity like Vanilla Ice? I doubt it. Will her narcissistic bravado withstand the trials of fame? She's not the first grandiose narcissist to find success, and she certainly won't be the last. Give it a few years, and I wouldn't be surprised if she lands her own talk show.
