Reflecting on an Unusual Month on Medium: June Insights

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to June

June has proven to be quite an unpredictable month for me on Medium! I initially felt grateful to be back in the writing groove, but soon faced some frustration as my follower count and article reads plateaued.

In comparison to May, June has not met my expectations, which seems to be a common occurrence on this platform. I must admit, I wasn't overly optimistic as I entered the month. After my removal from the Partner Program at the end of May, I set a modest goal for June: to begin earning again and avoid getting incorrectly flagged by Medium's AI detection software.

Despite the setbacks, I am pleased with my overall progress. It could have been more fruitful if my momentum hadn’t stalled, but sometimes we must work with the situation at hand.

Early Reflections of June

This month, I chose not to set specific follower or income targets, focusing instead on aspects I could control. One of my ambitions was to publish a new article each day. Although I didn’t hit that mark, I successfully released 48 articles throughout the month, comfortably averaging more than one per day.

I view 48 articles as a commendable accomplishment and take pride in my efforts. My ongoing aim is to produce 1 to 2 articles daily, which I find balances my output while providing my audience with a steady flow of new content.

The start of June was centered on regaining my writing rhythm and establishing a habit of regular publication. After my motivation took a hit at the end of May due to the Partner Program removal, I was almost ready to give up on Medium. However, I received an email that reignited my spirits: I was reinstated into the Partner Program, allowing me to continue earning.

Late Surprises in June

As June progressed, an unexpected twist occurred. Despite generally low reads, one of my articles unexpectedly soared, garnering hundreds of views in a single day. Unfortunately, my earnings didn’t reflect this spike, but it was exhilarating to see so many readers engaging with my work.

This sudden surge in readership was unprecedented for me. While I’ve experienced brief bursts of success before, witnessing such a significant spike in one day was an entirely new experience.

End-of-Month Metrics

In terms of statistics, I recorded 2.1k reads and 3.7k views, resulting in a read ratio of approximately 57%. While I accept this as satisfactory, I recognize room for growth. The final days of June negatively impacted my read ratio, dropping it below 50%. I’m uncertain about the reasons behind this dip, but I hope it doesn’t become a recurring trend. Overall, I’m content with the 2.1k reads; while it’s not my best month, it remains a success given the circumstances.

Regarding follower growth, I gained 152 followers—my lowest monthly increase since I started on the platform. However, I also welcomed 16 new email subscribers, which ties my highest monthly gain in that area. I interpret this as positive news, as slower follower growth was offset by a solid increase in email subscribers, who tend to engage more consistently with my content.

Key Insights from June

This month taught me several important lessons on Medium. Firstly, it’s vital to maintain consistency in publishing, even during periods of low motivation. Although I didn’t achieve my goal of daily articles, producing 48 articles was a significant feat that helped me regain my footing following a setback.

Additionally, I enjoyed meaningful interactions with fellow Medium users, leading to increased engagement on my articles as they generously supported my work.

The value of setting realistic, controllable goals became clear. By focusing on content creation and consistency rather than financial or follower metrics, I found more satisfaction in my work.

Looking ahead, I aim to continue prioritizing consistent content creation with a goal of publishing 1–2 articles daily. I’ll also focus on community engagement and work to enhance my read ratio by analyzing the performance of various content types.

June has been a tumultuous journey on Medium. Despite the challenges, I am proud of my progress and the insights I've gained. The unexpected rise in readership towards the end of the month serves as a reminder to persevere, even when momentum seems lost.
