Rediscovering My Narrative: Transforming Skepticism into Optimism

Chapter 1: Embracing Curiosity
My inquisitive spirit has always driven me to explore the world, which initially led me to develop a cynical outlook until I discovered the joys of writing.
Have you ever encountered individuals who seem to radiate boundless energy, regardless of whether they’ve had enough food, sleep, or even a sip of a drink? They appear to be high on life itself! Their presence can instantly uplift the mood of any room, bringing a vibrant energy that encourages everyone to join in. Many would describe them as being "in their zone," and they often relish the company they create.
That’s a bit like me! Mostly, at least. However, if I neglect proper nutrition and don’t get my eight hours of sleep, my energy balance seems to falter at 40!
To provide some context, my role in International Education Admission Consulting involves working with a select group of clients each year. This niche focuses on guiding potential Undergraduates, Master’s, and MBA candidates towards Ivy League and top-tier universities and business schools. With only two application deadlines—one in September and the other in January—my workload fluctuates significantly, leaving several months with little to no work unless I decide to take on additional projects.
For six to eight months, I channel my energy into numerous applications, and during the quieter times, my curiosity flourishes. This relentless quest for answers has been a part of my life since childhood, where I spent my time researching, experimenting, reading, and discovering new experiences and people.
While ambition isn’t a driving force for me, I enjoy engaging in a variety of activities that enrich my life and keep me productively occupied. I cherish both my routine and the personal time I carve out for my numerous interests. Although I often embark on new business ventures, it’s more about satisfying my curiosity and filling my time rather than pursuing new careers or side hustles.
My parents nurtured my natural curiosity with good intentions, though perhaps with a hint of naivety, as a way to manage my energetic disposition. I was always leaping around, dancing, singing, and engaging in imaginative play, often expressing lengthy thoughts on the strict discipline I faced from my mother.
Writing has been a steadfast passion since childhood. When I write, I not only forget my physical and mental constraints but also lose track of time as I immerse myself in the flow of words. My fingers seem to take on a life of their own, and I become a spectator to the unfolding narrative.
However, I have a peculiar sensitivity to red and blue underlines in my text; they act like a jolt back to reality, prompting me to revise and correct my course. Yet, I often find myself swept away again, much like I am in this moment.
I digress…
Writing is my greatest strength and a profound source of discovery. It serves as an unparalleled form of release for me. Even though I engage in various physical activities like dancing, weight training, running, and HIIT workouts, writing remains that extraordinary outlet, allowing me to channel my energy solely through my fingers on the keyboard.
The characters I create reflect aspects of myself across multiple dimensions. I embody some of their traits and occasionally add unique twists to make them even more fascinating than I am.
But the energy I once had has waned, leaving a flicker of light that reflects my past. As I grapple with the influences of our beliefs, values, and environments on my writing, I feel compelled to express my desire to break free from the cynicism that has clouded my thoughts for so long. This is my mission—to liberate myself from ideologies that no longer serve me.
Consequently, many of my writings explore the ways we have harmed the earth, our loved ones, and ourselves. I often reflect on the vibrant energy I used to possess, which I was frequently reprimanded for.
Yet, I question if this is merely another illusion.
To illustrate…
Is the fragrance of tulips a genuine sensation?
Is the warmth of sunlight on my skin real, or just an illusion?
What about the biting chill before a snowfall?
Does my father's embrace hold any substance, or is it merely a figment?
Are sunflowers genuinely turning towards the sun?
Or the way a child wraps their tiny fingers around their mother's hand?
What of my grandmother's famous Biryani?
What about the morning chorus of birds?
The stray dog that greets you each day with a wagging tail?
The soothing hot bath or refreshing cold shower you crave?
The comfort of your bed and the peace of sleep within it?
Is the rush of emotions upon seeing your first love simply an illusion?
Or the coziness of curling up with a good book?
The joy of celebrating your mother’s milestone birthday?
The carefree swing in the garden?
The awe of staring at majestic mountains?
The music of Pink Floyd or Eminem that resonates with you?
The tears of a beloved actor on screen?
The viral video that captures your life’s essence?
The banana peel that sends you tumbling into laughter with others?
The near-miss accident that left you unscathed?
The exhilarating rush of running into the ocean and feeling the waves?
The best burger you've ever tasted?
Your heartbreak?
Your fears? Just illusions?
And what about you? Are you real?
If you resonate with any of these experiences, then you must exist… somewhere, right?
If these and countless other moments are mere illusions of life, then count me in!
Writing, especially in this manner, liberates me from my cynical thoughts and rekindles my cherished zest for life. I hope it brings the same joy to you!
