# The Art of Selling Yourself as a Writer: Balancing Creativity and Commerce

Chapter 1: Writers as Part-Time Entrepreneurs
If only writers could lounge around, waiting for literary agents to drop by with invitations for tea, how fortunate they would feel!
"It would be quite delightful if an agent knocked on my door, offering a check for my debut book."
In reality, I’d wager that the odds of winning an $800 million lottery are higher than receiving that unexpected visit.
First and foremost, I am a full-time writer.
Secondly, I also embrace the role of a part-time seller.
I am in the business of providing a service and creating a product.
My service allows readers to momentarily escape from the chaos of current events, while my product consists of intricately woven narratives set in imaginative realms.
The seller in me emerges during social interactions, particularly when people inquire if I’ve retired.
When I respond with, “Not at all; I'm focused on building my writing career,” I observe their reactions closely.
If they raise an eyebrow and glance at my grey hair and wrinkled forehead, I can almost hear their thoughts: “Didn’t you save enough for retirement?”
My answer often includes, “With inflation as it is, my Social Security check barely suffices.”
When someone expresses, “I wish I could write a book, but I’m not sure how to begin,” I suggest, “Why not start with a birthday story?”
If their interest piques, I eagerly share a personal anecdote.
I recall a Saturday afternoon on my 10th birthday when I plunged my head into the cake, searching for goldfish.
After the laughter dies down, I add, “I’m fortunate my school friends were there; you should have seen my parents' expressions!”
That birthday remains the most memorable because my friends still recount how they laughed until they cried.
I also mention the stories I craft on Medium.com, intended for my future great-great-grandchildren.
(That’s the part-time selling I engage in.)
I assure them that I can assist them when they’re ready to begin, emphasizing the joy of creating a legacy.
“Writing for future generations, especially with a humorous twist, alleviates the pressure of striving for a spot on the New York Times bestseller list.”
Additionally, I offer this piece of advice:
I begin my tales with actual events and embellish them to make them more thrilling.
Since cell phones didn’t exist during my childhood, and no one documented those moments, I’m free from verification.
