Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of leading a group of volunteers in my student organization as President. This experience has been a rollercoaster filled with challenges, growth opportunities, and some of the most rewarding moments of my life.

Leadership transcends merely holding authority; it involves collaboration, nurturing growth, and collectively enhancing our skills. Leading a volunteer team serves as an excellent introduction to business leadership or management roles, providing a safe environment to explore and determine if this path suits you.

As a leader, you work with a group of individuals dedicated to achieving a common goal. While you may not have the option to select your team, this situation presents a unique opportunity to enhance your interpersonal skills and learn to collaborate with diverse personalities.

A key aspect of effective leadership is placing trust in your team members. They should understand their responsibilities, deadlines, and be able to provide consistent updates. However, not all individuals will be dependable, which can present challenges. Open communication is essential, particularly when addressing underperformance.

Remember, actions speak louder than words! If tasks remain uncompleted, discussions alone will not resolve the issue. Empower your team to take charge of their assignments without micromanaging. Allowing them to experience setbacks is crucial for their learning process.

Assisting Team Members in Their Growth

By granting your team members responsibilities and the liberty to choose how they tackle their tasks, they will encounter challenges that foster their development. For instance, if someone is hesitant, encouraging them to lead a project can significantly enhance their social skills.

No seminar can replicate the learning that comes from facing real-world challenges and failures. By offering them the freedom to adapt and make decisions, you will witness fresh ideas, innovative solutions, and a highly motivated team. You can transform their lives by providing them with opportunities to overcome obstacles.

Team Collaboration

One of the most demanding aspects of my leadership journey has been collaborating with varied personalities. Prior to this experience, I operated under the assumption that efficiency and organization were universally achievable with effort.

I managed to balance my studies, a 25-hour workweek, and my online writing commitments, all while leading the team. However, I learned that every individual has distinct ways of thinking, working, and perceiving the world.

Embracing these differences and leveraging each person's strengths is vital for effective teamwork. It requires not only communication skills but also understanding how to adapt messages for different recipients.

Teamwork is about recognizing each person’s unique skills and compensating for their weaknesses by utilizing the strengths of others. For example, I'm detail-oriented and proficient in writing, so I handle writing protocols and organizing meetings, while another member excels at motivating others, taking charge of recruitment and fun events.

Taking Charge

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my leadership role has been the ability to make decisions. I have little tolerance for tasks I perceive as unnecessary. While I must complete certain tasks at work, as a leader, I can prioritize what is essential.

I can skip unimportant marketing meetings and streamline discussions to ensure efficiency. As the leader, you determine what is crucial for both your team and yourself.

Self-Growth Through Leadership

When I began my role two years ago, I never anticipated the immense personal growth I would experience from leading and contributing to the team. Although the challenges could be stressful, the rewards that followed were well worth the effort.

Leading others and striving toward shared goals can teach you invaluable skills, including:

  • Networking and motivation techniques
  • Time management and organization
  • Presentation skills and effective communication
  • Embracing diverse perspectives
  • Balancing various roles in life

One significant transformation for me has been overcoming my fear of presentations. Previously, I would feel anxious and shaky, but through practice, I have grown more confident. Setting boundaries has also been a crucial lesson; I realized that I do not need to do everything myself.

Delegation: Embracing Your Limits

Everyone has only 24 hours in a day, including high achievers like Beyoncé or heads of state. They accomplish so much by effectively delegating tasks.

Consider your own skills; if there's a task you dislike or feel less competent in, delegate it to someone who excels in that area. For instance, while I can handle graphic design, I entrust social media tasks to a dedicated coordinator who enjoys and excels in that field.

This approach allows me to focus on what truly matters while empowering my team members to shine in their roles. Recognize your limitations and delegate appropriately, while also evaluating which tasks can be eliminated entirely.

Do you really need to expand outreach efforts when you already have enough to manage? Prioritize the essential 20% that yields 80% of your success.

The Ultimate Reward

The most gratifying aspect of leading a team is witnessing their growth. As I transition from my position, I am confident in the new team's ability to continue the work we started. Their development and skill acquisition are the greatest gifts they can offer me: the assurance that they will carry on our mission successfully.
