Unlocking Your Potential: The Lies We Tell Ourselves
Written on
Chapter 1: The Dangers of Realism
Confession time: I’m a “content stalker.”
Not in a creepy way, but more in a curious manner. I enjoy perusing comments on articles, videos, and books related to making money or launching a side hustle. My obsession stems from understanding the struggles of others and pinpointing where they encounter obstacles. This habit has persisted for years (I know, a little odd).
As I sift through these comments, I've identified a recurring theme that acts as a significant barrier to many achieving their true potential.
Section 1.1: Misconceptions of Realism
It's common to encounter comments like:
- "Let’s be realistic. The market is saturated with books. Save your energy."
- "Realistically, it takes years to monetize a YouTube channel, and even then, the earnings are minimal."
- "The average author barely makes $100 monthly. I’m a realist; I won't earn much."
I often wonder, how far has this “realist” mindset gotten these individuals? How many remarkably successful realists can you name? Think about it: Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs weren’t constrained by realism. Musk's ambition to colonize Mars is a prime example.
People often use "realism" as a shield against failure, fearing wasted effort or embarrassment. While I understand this mindset, it’s fundamentally flawed. The rationale seems to be: "Many have failed, so I will too." But what about those who succeeded? Why model your approach on failures?
I’ve adopted a different perspective, akin to a scene from Dumb and Dumber, where Jim Carrey’s character learns there's still a slim chance of success. This hopeful outlook fosters motivation and helps overcome the urge to quit prematurely.
Subsection 1.1.1: Ditching Realism for Delusion
Chapter 2: Three Empowering Lies
I often tell myself three “lies” that I believe have significantly contributed to my achievements as a solopreneur. I encourage you to adopt them and observe the results!
Lie #1: I'm Not Average
While I may be just an average person—average looks, average intelligence, an average upbringing—I refuse to let this label confine my potential. When I read that most self-published authors earn only $1,000, I think, "That's their reality, not mine."
When you consider the bell curve, there’s a substantial area above average. Surprising as it may seem, achieving above-average results isn’t as daunting as it appears. Many quit too soon or avoid putting in the necessary effort. If you can push through discomfort and maintain focus, you can easily reach that upper tier. Challenge your “realist” mindset and believe you’re capable of extraordinary results.
Lie #2: If They Can Do It, So Can I
This might be an oversimplification, as I won’t be running a four-minute mile or traveling to the moon. However, when I see someone achieve a goal I aspire to, I assume I can replicate their success. Why not?
By studying successful individuals, I can reverse-engineer their methods and apply them to my own journey. This is why I create case studies; they’re not only entertaining but also invaluable for my growth. When you see someone doing something you want to pursue, tell yourself, "I can achieve that too!" Then start analyzing their strategies and processes.
Lie #3: I Can Outperform Any Rival
While there will always be competitors with greater talent or resources, I can analyze top contenders in my niche and strive to create something superior. I often do this on platforms like Amazon and YouTube.
First, I research the competition, taking notes on their shortcomings. Reviews often reveal what customers dislike. This feedback serves as market research, guiding me in developing a product that outshines the current leaders in the category. Remember, many shy away from competition, seeking smaller markets to dominate.
Don’t be that fish in a puddle. Instead, learn to thrive in the vast ocean of opportunities. There’s enough space for everyone!
