Innovative AI Model Uses Brain Signals to Create Emotional Video Summaries

A groundbreaking automatic video summarization system is now utilizing viewers' brain signals to identify the most emotionally charged highlights that captivate audiences.

Navigating the vast array of content on streaming platforms can be quite challenging. With countless enticing videos available, it’s often difficult to select the perfect one. To aid in our decision-making, we frequently seek out brief video summaries—such as thrilling trailers, humorous compilations, or suspenseful snippets that leave us eager for more.

Typically, these video previews consist of meticulously curated clips showcasing the most compelling moments. Creators of these summaries aim to encapsulate both the narrative and the emotional essence of the content.

To automate this process, technology experts have developed algorithms designed to generate video summaries independently. However, many existing programs either require extensive labeled data—where each segment of the video is annotated—or struggle to identify captivating moments without such guidance.

"Ascertaining what makes a video interesting can be challenging, as what excites one viewer may not resonate with another," noted Wai Cheong Lew, a computer science researcher.

To create a program capable of discerning emotionally engaging video segments, Lew and fellow researchers from A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and Singapore Management University (SMU) devised an innovative training approach. Rather than relying on numerous videos accompanied by subjective annotations, they considered an intriguing alternative: analyzing brain signals emitted by viewers while they engage with videos.

Using electroencephalography (EEG)—a specialized technique to monitor brain activity—they were able to pinpoint which video segments elicited distinct emotional responses. These brain signals served as a new method to instruct the computer program on identifying exciting video portions.

"Brain signals provide an alternative means of conveying what’s interesting to the computer, eliminating the need for manual annotations," Lew explained.

This project was a collaborative effort, involving Joo-Hwee Lim and Kai Keng Ang from I2R, alongside other researchers from NTU and SMU.

Given the diversity of individual preferences, the training dataset incorporated various personal perspectives. "Utilizing brain signals posed challenges, as they can be ambiguous and complicate the training process," Lew acknowledged.

To address this, the researchers implemented a sophisticated program called the EEG Linear Attention Network (ELAN). This model analyzes brain signals over time and from various brain regions, focusing solely on the consistent signals shared among participants.

By integrating ELAN with existing video processing algorithms, they developed a novel model known as EEG-Video Emotion-based Summarization (EVES). This model enhances the selection of emotionally impactful video segments, allowing summaries to resonate more profoundly with viewers. In comparative tests, EVES outperformed standard models and matched the efficacy of those requiring extensive descriptions.

A group of viewers assessed the summaries produced by EVES and reported a preference for these over those generated by other systems. They found EVES summaries to be better organized and richer in emotional content.

Lew is optimistic that advancements like this will spark greater interest in combining brain signals with video technology for improved outcomes.
