Star Trek: TNG - Delving into Unknown Knowns, Part 3

Chapter 1: A Glimpse into Engineering

In the tranquil recesses of Engineering, Wesley and Emily are engaged at a console, ice cream spoons in hand.

EMILY

(While scrolling through mission logs, taking bites of choc-mint ice cream)

Look at all these missions... Delos IV, Hertaxian Nebula, Cygnus V, Andoria... I wish I could have visited them.

WESLEY

You did.

EMILY

Not quite the same.

(Pauses, reflecting.)

It’s fascinating. We truly are defined by our memories.

WESLEY

True. It’s profound... perhaps a bit too obvious for us cybernetics folks... but for an archaeologist...

EMILY

(Smirking, delivers a playful punch to his shoulder.)

We did attend a two-day seminar series on parallel convergent history... three— not two— poker nights... and Ahmed’s birthday bash...

WESLEY

(After a spoonful of toffee-banana ice cream)

Yeah, we’ve certainly shared some experiences...

And why would I participate in a history conference?

EMILY

(Feigning disgust)

So, you’re not genuinely interested in archaeology... the truth is out!

WESLEY

I mean, for two whole days...

EMILY

What? What’s on your mind?

WESLEY

(Blushing)

Nothing.

EMILY

Wait a second...

WESLEY

I’m just imagining how... ahh, the other me might have felt about... the... other you...

EMILY

(Pauses)

Just the other you, huh?

WESLEY

Of course... Ensign Harrison.

(Changing the subject)

We’re supposed to figure out why someone or something is keeping us from recalling... something.

EMILY

(Giggling)

Well, that’s not working.

(Then, becoming serious)

Alright, here’s a tantalizing mission in the Romulan neutral zone. We were both involved in that operation too.

I don’t recall any of it.

WESLEY

(Pauses, deep in thought)

Neither do I.

EMILY

(Playfully scrolling down)

It’s all your fault...

Wait a moment. It says “Classified Mission — Level 7 clearance required.”

WESLEY

Classified? That might relate to our lost memories.

EMILY

Seems like it’s worth investigating. We need a way to access it.

Act 2 | Scene 1: Counselor Troi’s Office

(The ambiance is soothing as Wesley sits, visibly agitated, while Troi is behind her desk.)

TROI

Wesley, how are you holding up?

WESLEY

Physically fine, but mentally, I’m all over the map.

TROI

Do you recall anything when you’re with Emily?

WESLEY

Bits and pieces, but nothing solid. We’ve figured out—more from logs than anything else—that we might have been... almost an item. At least, it’s clear I had feelings for her.

And I still do.

TROI

Really? That could be significant.

Not many of us have the chance to fall in love with the same person multiple times. It’s almost a hidden blessing.

WESLEY

It’s a bit wild, Deanna. It feels like there are two versions of us.

TROI

Your mother mentioned you seem distracted.

WESLEY

My mother?

(Pauses, pale)

I don’t even remember who she is!

TROI

(Shocked)

You can’t recall Dr. Beverly Crusher?

WESLEY

I can’t remember... anything at all.

TROI

(To herself)

Why would your memory loss extend to Beverly?

WESLEY

Well, you did mention she’s the ship’s doctor...

TROI

Exactly! And now, Emily is a common link between you and your mother.

(She stands up to head to sickbay)

Let’s go.

WESLEY

But the dosimeter I’m wearing should...

Act 2 | Scene 2: Sickbay

(Sickbay is bustling with medical staff. Wesley lies on a medical bed, sensors attached to his forehead. Dr. Crusher approaches him first.)

DR. CRUSHER

Wesley, do you know who I am?

WESLEY

(Trying to concentrate, confused)

No. But I’ve been told... you’re my... mother? That kind of explains our last names.

DR. CRUSHER

Yes, Wesley. We’ll figure this out.

(Pausing, her eyes reflecting both professional concern and maternal worry, she addresses Nurse Ogowa)

This is far more serious than I anticipated. Let’s initiate a comprehensive neural diagnostic. And ensure that dosimeter is functioning correctly.

Emily enters with Troi, deep in conversation, and stands beside Wesley’s bed.

EMILY

Wes, do you recall anything else about that classified mission?

WESLEY

(Looks bewildered)

I’m sorry, have I forgotten who you are too?

EMILY

(Voice steady, eyes filled with concern)

Oh no. It’s... Emily. We’ve been investigating our shared experiences, missions, and the classified operation that seems to be a pivotal point for our memory loss.

WESLEY

(Trying to piece it together)

Emily, right? I wish I could remember any of this.

EMILY

We’ll discover a solution, Wes. I promise.

Part 4 is on the way...
