Understanding the Essence of Water: Insights from David Foster Wallace

Written on

Chapter 1: The Significance of Awareness

In 2005, David Foster Wallace delivered a memorable commencement address to the graduates of Kenyon College, a speech that has resonated deeply with many.

Imagine two young fish swimming along when they encounter an older fish swimming in the opposite direction. The older fish greets them with, "Good morning, boys. How's the water?" The two young fish swim a bit further, and then one turns to the other and asks, "What on earth is water?"

Our cognitive processes are designed to focus on change, as change can signify potential risks. We instinctively prepare for danger. If we were to create two lists—one detailing the changes of the past two decades and the other highlighting what has remained relatively stable—the second list would likely be much longer.

Moreover, the changes that have occurred did not happen overnight. The rise of the Internet and social media has been a gradual process. Technologies such as 3D printing and blockchain have yet to fulfill their anticipated roles in society. Concepts like augmented reality and the metaverse are still distant from becoming a part of our daily lives.

Jeff Bezos once remarked, "I often receive the question: 'What will change in the next decade?' This is a fascinating and common inquiry. However, I rarely hear, 'What will remain the same in the next decade?' I propose that the latter question is actually the more crucial one, as it allows for the development of a business strategy anchored in stability."

There are numerous elements in our environment that have not altered for years, presenting a wealth of business opportunities.
