“Having ‘fake followers’ on social media can create an illusion of greater influence or celebrity status, especially when the ratio of fake accounts becomes evident,” comments a recent report from Sortlist, a global marketing firm. Notably, Hawaiian-born model and Instagram sensation Jay Alvarrez has found himself on an infamous list, reportedly having the highest number of “fake followers.”

Of his 6.8 million followers, around 2.45 million—equating to 36 percent—are considered inauthentic. This raises questions about the actual impact of such influencers.
