Disappointment in Apple's 2022 iPad Pro: A Closer Look
Written on
Overview of Apple’s iPad Releases
Apple has consistently enjoyed success with its iPad lineup over the years. The iPad, especially in recent times, has proven to be a robust device and a lucrative product for the company, which diligently works to maintain this trend. However, the recent announcement of two new iPads—the 10th generation standard iPad and the new iPad Pro—has left many feeling underwhelmed.
The Anticipation and Reality
There was widespread expectation that Apple would host a significant event in October, similar to previous years, to unveil new Macs and substantial upgrades for the iPads. Instead, the company opted for a low-key announcement via their website, leaving many to ponder the lack of fanfare.
Upon closer inspection of the newly unveiled devices, it becomes clear why Apple chose not to present them on stage; the latest iPad Pro has turned out to be a major disappointment, and it comes with a surprising price increase.
Prior reports hinted at a transformative year for the iPad Pro lineup, with promises of redesigns and upgraded features. However, the anticipated glass back for wireless charging and Mini-LED display technology for the 11-inch model failed to materialize.
The Missed Details
Historically, Apple has been known for its meticulous attention to detail, but this year seems to have been an exception. For instance, Apple introduced a new keyboard Folio for the budget-friendly 10th generation iPad, featuring a top row of function keys—an enhancement that would be expected for the pricier iPad Pro, yet it remains unchanged.
Even the basic iPad received a thoughtful design change by relocating the camera for landscape use, enhancing video call experiences. However, this improvement was not mirrored in the more premium iPad Pro, despite claims of its significance on the basic model's promotional page.
What We Received
The new iPads have received minimal upgrades. The primary change is the chip upgrade from M1 to M2, likely aimed at distinguishing the 11-inch iPad Pro from the more affordable iPad Air, which utilizes the same chip.
While the M2 chip boasts a 15% increase in CPU performance and a 35% boost in GPU performance—beneficial for gamers and professionals alike—this alone falls short of the major advancements that users had hoped for.
Pricing Concerns
Fortunately, there has been no price hike for the new iPad in the U.S.; however, in the U.K., the iPad Pro now retails for £899, up from £749, despite merely receiving an upgraded chip.
Final Thoughts
Having followed Apple closely for years, I have never felt as let down by an announcement as I do now, particularly regarding the premium devices. Apple has a history of delivering substantial upgrades for its high-end products, but this year, that expectation was not met.
