The M2 MacBook Air: Still Reigning Supreme in the Laptop World

Written on

Chapter 1: The Wonder of the M2 MacBook Air

Recently, I traveled to Brussels to test out the iPad mini as my sole computing device. Surprisingly, it performed exceptionally well. So well, in fact, that I’m considering taking it as my only gadget on future trips where video editing or audio recording isn't necessary. (Check out the video for the full story.) Nonetheless, despite the iPad mini's impressive capabilities in Belgium, I did find myself longing for my Mac. For someone who has always carried a MacBook in their luggage, this feeling was to be expected—this is not a critique of the iPad mini.

Interestingly, it’s the specific model I missed that tells a deeper story. It wasn’t my 16-inch MacBook Pro (I do value my back, after all), nor was it even the 14-inch MacBook Pro that I’ve recently grown fond of. Instead, it was the M2 MacBook Air, which I genuinely believe still holds the title of the best laptop on the market.

Chapter 2: A Candid Confession

I’ve always been cautious with new tech during the initial months after purchase, even when these devices are essential for my work. When the M2 MacBook Air first arrived, I felt the need to handle it with extra care due to its slender design and the risk of scratches on its Midnight finish.

To safeguard it, I immediately invested in a protective case (the Inateck Hard Shell comes highly recommended). I made sure to place the MacBook Air gently on surfaces, and I’d only leave it unattended when I was certain that no one would attempt to place anything on top of it.

However, as time went on, my vigilance lessened. I started to treat the device with a bit more disregard, occasionally neglecting its protective casing and sometimes leaving it in precarious spots. Now, less than a year later, I’ve reached that comfortable point with my M2 MacBook Air, and to my delight, it remains in excellent condition (even the clicking sound instigated by my son has faded away).

Chapter 3: The Portability Factor

I previously praised the convenience of the 14-inch MacBook Pro, particularly how easily it can be carried. You can simply close the lid and tuck it under your arm, making it feel like you own the room.

However, the M2 MacBook Air takes portability to another level. It can be held effortlessly between just your thumb and forefinger, a feature that has been a hallmark of the MacBook Air series. This lightness and ease of handling make it a joy to transport; the M2 version enhances this experience significantly.

Chapter 4: Performance Insights

Last year, I brought the M2 MacBook Air to London for some last-minute video editing, and it did not perform as expected. It struggled significantly with the 10-bit 4K footage in Final Cut Pro, causing me to abandon the task. This was disappointing, especially since the M1 version handles the same footage without issues.

It's widely recognized that the M2 chip has some limitations, as it serves as a transitional model while Apple develops their next generation of silicon. While I won't excuse these shortcomings, it's essential to be mindful when configuring your M2 MacBook Air. If you choose the right specifications, it still delivers outstanding performance and energy efficiency.

Chapter 5: Spec Recommendations

Fortunately, selecting the right specs for your M2 MacBook Air is straightforward. For basic tasks such as email and administration, the base model is more than sufficient. If you plan on doing anything more demanding, it's wise to opt for the 16GB RAM and at least 512GB of storage.

Chapter 6: Should You Wait for the M3?

As we look ahead, rumors swirl around the potential release of an updated MacBook Air featuring the M3 chip. This new model may come in two versions: one that resembles the current design and another in a larger 15-inch format.

That said, the timeline for this release remains uncertain. Even if the new model appears soon, most users won’t notice a significant performance difference. Many choose the MacBook Air for its portability and versatility. If you find yourself needing a laptop now, it’s best to make the purchase rather than wait for Apple’s next move.

Conclusion: The M2 MacBook Air Still Reigns

I confidently assert that the M2 MacBook Air is the reigning champion in the laptop world. If you disagree, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. The only question left is when I’ll start personalizing mine with stickers.
