Samsung Galaxy S22: A Compact Powerhouse for 2024

Overview of the Samsung Galaxy S22
In February, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S22 series during its annual Galaxy Unpacked event. This smartphone aims to compete with high-end models such as the Realme GT2 Pro and Xiaomi 12, as well as the basic iPhones and older Pro variants. Few smartphones have mirrored Apple's designs as closely as the Galaxy S22. The following sections will explore whether Samsung's attempts to rival Apple have been successful.
Contents of the Galaxy S22 Package
Samsung has previously criticized Apple for not including a charging adapter with its iPhones, promising customers that they would receive a charger with their devices. However, the trend shifted with the Galaxy S21, and the Galaxy S22 continues this practice.
Inside the box, you'll find the phone, a USB-C cable, a SIM eject tool, and various brochures. Unfortunately, you won't find a case included, a feature that both Realme and Xiaomi offer with their devices. The reason? Samsung, similar to Apple, can afford to exclude it.
Design and Build Quality
From a design perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S22 is arguably the finest smartphone from South Korea that I have ever held. The use of premium materials—metal for the frame and glass for the back—conveys a luxurious feel.
While the design changes are subtle compared to its predecessor, a notable difference is the camera module, which now matches the color of the rest of the phone. The phone measures 146 x 70.6 x 7.6 mm, making it comparable in size to the Google Pixel 4, Asus ZenFone 8, and yes, the iPhone 13. If anyone has previously claimed that an Android phone resembled an iPhone, this statement holds particularly true for the Galaxy S22. Its compact design allows for easy one-handed operation.
Display Excellence
The display quality is another standout feature of the Galaxy S22. It boasts a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. With a maximum brightness of 1300 nits, the display remains visible even under direct sunlight.
The Always-On display and Gorilla Glass Victus+ offer additional protection. One of the most appealing aspects is the slim and symmetrical bezels surrounding the flat display.
Performance and Hardware
The Galaxy S22 is powered by the Exynos 2200 chipset coupled with 8 GB of RAM. While this version is available in various European countries, the US market only offers the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 variant. The performance of both chipsets is competitive, though I would personally prefer the Snapdragon variant.
User Experience with One UI
Along with its hardware, the Galaxy S22 runs on One UI 4.1, based on Android 12. Before delving into its features, it’s worth noting that the system is well-executed.
Unlike other manufacturers, Samsung incorporates features like Dynamic Color, which adjusts wallpaper colors to align with the system. The new Weather widget is a welcome addition, along with enhanced privacy and security options, and redesigns for several apps, including the Camera.
Final Thoughts
At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy S22 5G might seem like an ordinary smartphone, but it offers much more beneath the surface. Its compact size is a significant advantage, appealing to users who enjoy their devices without excessive bulk.
This device is not meant for light use; it features a 6.1-inch display that is perfect for binge-watching Netflix in bed. Despite some frustrations regarding software updates, Samsung has managed to impress me with the overall package.
With its compact form, excellent cameras, stunning display with symmetrical bezels, robust performance, and a reasonable price point, the Galaxy S22 checks many boxes. The only drawbacks might be its tendency to heat up and its battery life. Otherwise, it currently has no significant flaws.
